VMware vSphere 7 – the next numbered release

vmware

VMworld is two weeks away from now and they already gave us a sneak preview about some upcoming changes in their next product line.

vCenter Server for Windows

VMware plans to deprecate vCenter Server for Windows with the next numbered release (not update release) of vSphere.  The next version of vSphere will be the terminal release for which vCenter Server for Windows will be available.

The vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) was first introduced with the release of vSphere 5.0 and has since evolved to become the definitive deployment model for vCenter Server. VMware has also been pushing the appliance a bit by giving it features that are exclusive such as:

  • Migration
  • Improved Appliance Management
  • VMware Update Manager
  • Native High Availability
  • Built-in Backup / Restore

VMware plans to deprecate the Flash-based vSphere Web Client

The vSphere GUIs, including the vSphere Web Client and HTML5-based vSphere Client, are tools that are used every day by IT to manage the operation of their virtual data center.  VMware is constantly striving to make these tools performant and easy to use.  However, with the vSphere Web Client, the community were frustrated because it was based on Flash technology that resulted in less than ideal performance and constant update requirements.   Additionally, Adobe has recently announced plans to deprecate Flash.

VMware had the intention for a few years now to eventually replace the vSphere Web Client with a modern GUI administration tool.  The HTML5-based vSphere Client is that worthy successor.  The vSphere Client was introduced first in the Fling, then supported with vSphere 6.5 and has now been in customer hands for 1.5 years and production tested for over 9 months.  Since its introduction, the vSphere Client has received overwhelmingly positive responses from the vSphere community and customer base.

By the time the vSphere Web Client is deprecated, the vSphere Client will be full featured but with significantly better responsiveness and usability.

The vSphere Client will be the primary GUI administration tool for vSphere environments starting in the next release.  Customers should start transitioning over to the vSphere Client if they have not already done so as the vSphere Web Client will no longer be available after the next vSphere release.

The X-Files – The truth is out there, again

After a long delay, a deal is finally in place to produce a second edition of Fox’s “The X-Files” revival. The show’s three principals — stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, and creator/executive producer Chris Carter — are back for the new installment.

The event series is set to air during the 2017-2018 season, with production set to begin in summer 2017.

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why ‘The X-Files’ has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide,” said David Madden, President, Fox Broadcasting Company. “Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of ‘The X-Files.’”

In 2016, the return of ‘The X-Files’ drew an “average Multi-Platform audience” of nearly 16 million viewers, the network said, and was last season’s No. 2 broadcast drama.

“The X-Files” originally premiered in September 1993 and ran for nine seasons, earning 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award. The show follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained cases.

Fargo – the third installment of Fargo

A new season of Fargo has started. Fargo was one of the early shows which begins with a new cast and story every season, something we’ve seen a lot more in the recent two years and this season will be baked by the same recipes. It promises to be a good season as it has received highly positive reviews from critics and the audience rating so far is also very high.

Power Throttling your background apps on Windows

Most people have multiple apps running at the same time – and often, what’s running in the background can drain your battery. In the latest Insider Preview build (Build 16176), Microsoft allows you to run background work in a power-efficient manner, thereby enhancing battery life significantly while still giving users access to powerful multitasking capabilities. With “Power Throttling”, when background work is running, Windows places the CPU in its most energy-efficient operating modes – work gets done, but the minimal possible battery is spent on that work.

Microsoft mentioned in January that they where doing some power experiments. Power Throttling was one of those experiments, and showed up to 11% savings in CPU power consumption for some of the most strenuous use cases. This capability should help many of you see a nice boost in battery life!

Background Moderated apps are the Power Throttled ones.

Power Throttling is currently available only for processors with Intel’s Speed Shift technology, available in Intel’s 6th-gen (and newer) Core processors. Processors where the first number after i3, i5 or i7 starts with a 6 are currently available (for example i5-6400, i7-6600). Other processors, read older ones, will likely be added to the support list in the future.

A passage from Microsoft:

How does it work? To give great performance to the apps you’re using, while at the same time power throttling background work, we built a sophisticated detection system into Windows. The OS identifies work that is important to you (apps in the foreground, apps playing music, as well as other categories of important work we infer from the demands of running apps and the apps the user interacts with). While this detection works well for most apps, if you happen to notice an app that is negatively impacted by Power Throttling, we really want to know!! You can do 3 things:

1. Provide feedback! Please run the Feedback Hub and file feedback under the Power and Battery > Throttled Applications category

2. Control power throttling system-wide, using the Power Slider. Windows works hardest to keep the processor in its efficient ranges when you’ve selected “Battery Saver” or “Recommended”, and turns off completely when you’ve selected “Best Performance”.

Power Slider

3. Opt individual apps out from Power Throttling:

  • Go to Battery Settings (Settings >  System > Battery).
  • Click on “Battery Usage by App”.
  • Select your app.
  • Toggle “Managed by Windows” to “Off”.
  • Uncheck the “Reduce work app does when in background” checkbox.

Note that benchmark results may vary with power throttling turned on. While most benchmarks run fine and produce great performance results, some benchmark processes may be affected by throttling. Our general recommendation is to always run performance benchmarks while plugged in, as power throttling does not apply in that case.

I find a few things weird in this text. First of all, why mention music apps? It’s not like an app playing music would need full power of a 6th generation Intel Core processor. Are there some restrictions with apps that use DirectSound or Direct3D?

And as you can read in the final sentence this feature won’t be available on your Desktop. Why? Why wouldn’t I want 11% power-savings (or even more since desktops processors are likely to use more power) on my desktop?

Deadwood Revival For Big Screen? – Script ‘Has Been Delivered to HBO,’ Says Ian McShane

Better Call Saul – Season 3 starting tonight

The third season of “Better Call Saul” is here. Season 3 comes closer to the world of Walter White with the reintroduction of Los Pollos Hermanos proprietor/cartel-killer Gustavo Fring, played by Giancarlo Esposito.

Giancarlo Esposito in Breaking Bad (2008)

While the show has very good ratings and critics love it, I didn’t feel te same fibe yet as with Breaking Bad.

A season 3 premiere with some extra footage was shown to a select group of critics and most of them are pretty positive about the new season. Lets hope it picks up the pace just a little bit and more things happen during an episode. The keyword for season 3 is: Consequences

AMC has released a new teaser featuring Gus. In the video, dressed in his signature crisp yellow shirt and black tie, Gus introduces a 10-week online seminar and explains proper employee behavior at Los Pollos Hermanos. “Each and every day we serve our customers exceptional food with impeccable service,” says Gus in the video. But, as “Breaking Bad” fans know, the restaurant chain also runs as a money-laundering business and drug-smuggling operation.

Bullets Of Justice – a possible cult hit or just terrible?

Okay, I’m normally not into weird movies and have one golden rule. If the movie has people in it with pointy ears, you stay away from it. Does that also count for series? probably…  but what if the pointy ears are from a pig?

about

During the Third World War, the American government initiates a secret project code-named “Army Bacon” in order to create super soldier by inbreeding human beings with pigs.

25 years later a breed called “Muzzles” have occupied top of the food chain, eating and farming humans like animals. Rob Justice is an ex-bounty hunter working for the last line of human resistance – a group of survivors hiding in a nuclear bunker deep underground. His mission is to find out how muzzles came to power and destroy them.
