This Is Us (2016-)

About

Everyone has a family. And every family has a story. “This Is Us” chronicles the Pearson family across the decades: from Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) as young parents in the 1980s to their 37-year-old kids Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) searching for love and fulfillment in the present day. This grounded, life-affirming dramedy reveals how the tiniest events in our lives impact who we become, and how the connections we share with each other can transcend time, distance and even death.

Wrecked (2016-) – a Lost spoof

About

A new comedy on TBS about a bunch of nobodies who get stranded on a desert island after their plane goes down and all hell breaks loose.

Storyline

Wrecked follows a group of extremely diverse survivors of a plane crash on a remote island who must adjust to life in a dangerous new world that poses unique threats — mostly brought upon themselves. No longer plugged in, the group must navigate this new society and learn to live without the comforts of modern life…like social media, Wi-Fi, indoor plumbing and Chipotle.

Ratings

IMDB 7.0/10

Audience Score 84%

Critics Consensus: Wrecked is an imaginative spoof of Lost with a game cast that doesn’t have enough good material to work with.

Trivia

Season 1 is filmed in Puerto Rico, Season 2 in Fiji.

“Wrecked” plays as an amalgamation of three different television series: “Lost”, “Gilligan’s Island”, and “Police Squad”, with the actors playing out the absurd situations (most of which they unwittingly create themselves) and dialogue completely straight.

The character of Liam is clearly an homage to the character of Jack in Lost. Liam dies in the pilot episode when the nose of the plane crushes him. The original idea in Lost was to have Jack killed off in the pilot episode

Personal View

Wrecked: a nice show that will not become primetime number 1 watched show of the week but will do just fine when you want to see something funny in under 25 minutes.

Fargo – Season 3

Fargo Season 3

About

Set in 2010, the third installment of Fargo centers on Emmit Stussy and his slightly younger brother Ray (Ewan McGregor in dual roles).

Emmit, the “Parking Lot King of Minnesota,” is a handsome, self-made real estate mogul with a perfect family – a real American success story. His slightly younger brother Ray is more of a cautionary tale. Wilted from a lifetime of living in Emmit’s shadow, Ray is a balding, pot-bellied parole officer with a huge chip on his shoulder about the hand he’s been dealt – and he blames his brother.

The only bright spot in Ray’s life is the love of a not-so-good woman, Nikki Swango (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), one of his parolees. Nikki has brains, beauty and a deep and abiding passion for competitive bridge. She decides to help Ray turn his fortunes around, by essentially stealing back his good karma. Unsurprisingly, things quickly get out of hand and petty theft leads to murder.

When the mayhem crosses county lines, Eden Valley Police Chief Gloria Burgle (Carrie Coon), a newly divorced mother, is called upon to investigate. Normally steady and imperturbable, Gloria is shaken when the case takes an unexpectedly personal turn. Meanwhile, Emmit’s perfect life is upended when he receives an unwelcome business proposal from a mysterious loner and true capitalist, V.M. Vargas (David Thewlis), whose bosses plan to become business partners with “The Parking Lot King” whether Emmit likes it or not.

Critics Consensus: Thanks in part to a memorable dual performance from Ewan McGregor, Fargo mostly maintains the sly wit and off-kilter sensibility it displayed in its first two seasons.

About the true story disclaimer

As with the original film, each episode begins with the superimposed text:

This is a true story. The events depicted took place in Minnesota in [year]. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.

To give you a short answer, it’s all complete fiction. Doing some research and reading the stories I tend to dislike the Coen brothers. Remember season 2? An interview:

“There are actually two little elements in the story that were based on actual incidents,” Joel Coen told HuffPost. “One of them is the fact that there was a guy, I believe in the ‘60s or ‘70s, who was gumming up serial numbers for cars and defrauding the General Motors Finance Corporation. There was no kidnapping. There was no murder. It was a guy defrauding the GM Finance Corporation at some point.”

Okay… so there was a guy scraping serial numbers for car chassis…… Why fool the audience every episode with the true story crap?

Big thumbs up for the makeup department

The 100 – Season 5 news

The 100

I just finished S04 and am glad that the show did great after a not so good S03. IMDB ratings picked up from a 7.8 and 7.9 for the first two episodes to end with a 9.3. Now that’s what you call a great end! The final 3 minutes of the seasons last episode did bring up a lot questions with the fans. Here’s some explanation.

A chat with executive producer Jason Rothenberg

My initial thought when I saw the little girl with Clarke was “She’s way too old to be her actual daughter.” Who is she?
Well, it’s not her biological daughter, but what we’ll see in Season 5 is that this relationship is hugely important for Clarke. She’s a Nightblood named Maddie, and she’s been with her for five years. They are, for all intents and purposes, bonded the way a mother and daughter would be. So Clarke loves her, and her decision-making process has changed, just as it does for anyone who has a child. … We’ll tell the story of how they came together in Season 5, and how they’ve been surviving as the only two people on the planet — until that ship shows up.

Yeah, about that spaceship… Should we just assume it’s packed with angry prisoners?
We will definitely tell their story. Some of them will probably be angry. All of them will be home, alive and back on Earth. I think, in some really cool ways, it’s a rebooting of the entire story. The 100 were prisoners when they came to the ground, and they thought they were alone, but they weren’t. There were Grounders in this world, which we learned when a spear came out of the woods and impaled Jasper’s chest. Now Clarke is the Grounder, and these prisoners are the 100. We screw with people’s perspectives. Of course, the prisoners are going to start as antagonists, but we’ll probably dimensionalize them as we do with all of our bad guys.

The 100 Promotes Tasya Teles (Echo) to Series Regular in Season 5

Echo was last seen blasting off into space with Bellamy, Raven, etc. during Wednesday’s fourth season finale, “Praimfaya.” Echo was first introduced as a prisoner in Mount Weather towards the end of The CW drama’s second season, and has maintained a tenuous connection to Clarke and Co. ever since. Despite being one of the “good” (or at least “better”) characters, Echo has been known to behave erratically, occasionally dipping her toe in the betrayal pond.

Isaiah Washington (Jaha) Not Returning as Series Regular in Season 5

But don’t go throwing dirt on Jaha’s grave just yet; at this point, it’s unclear how Washington’s character will be written out of the show, nor is it known whether the actor may appear again in a guest-star capacity.

Washington’s character, Thelonious Jaha, has undergone a radical transformation since we met him three years ago. After being stripped of his chancellor title, Jaha became a lost soul, eventually finding salvation — or so he thought — via the promises of an evil technological being known as A.L.I.E. Following her defeat, Jaha attempted to redeem himself, most recently helping his people gain access to a top-secret bunker that could save them from an impending nuclear death wave.

Netflix – each country’s favorite show

It’s cool to see the differences in each country / culture. In North and South America almost every country has a different most popular TV show, only Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead are listed twice.

In Western Europe House of Cards is very popular, recently American politics became an almost weekly item in the news here with the colorful (Orange 😀 ) Trump. Maybe interest has grown after that for a show about manipulation, blackmail, greed and determination in politics.

Also interesting to see that some countries in the Middle East and Central Asia like the older shows Lost and Friends.

American Gods (TV Show) – Can’t watch it anymore

Believe… right

Oh my… All aboard the hype train or if you take my advice proceed to the nearest exist as quick as you can. To think I wrote a post about this show before it started, I’m sorry.

Who can watch this… The story is so unclear and all over the place. The timeline in the show is also screwed up. I do not know if it is on purpose that every character in the show is not likeable but they sure aren’t.

[###SPOILERS###]Mr. Wednesday seems to be the leader of old gods, yet he needs a human bodyguard… Shadow Moon should never ever think about botox in his face, he already has a hard time showing any expression. The lady who consumes people with her vagina is about the dumbest thing I’ve seen. Show Moons ex-wife is a zombie whose arm fell off and she is stitched together but seems to be the physically strongest person in the show. Peter Stormare can play a lot of things but not a Slavic dude like Czernobog. As far as I’ve seen his powers are that he can kill a cow with a hammer. The leprechaun fights in every scene he is in. The new gods are probably even worse, I hated the Technical Boy character as soon as 5 seconds. [/###SPOILERS###]

In episode 1 ‘Shadow Moon’ (Yeah that’s the name of the main character, should have been a warning already) he gets released from prison and needs to get to a funeral of his girlfriend.

Episode 2 and 3 are continuing normally with time, a few weeks seems to pass by. Episode 4 suddenly is the story about how Shadow Moon met his girlfriend. If I remember correctly it goes about 8 years back where he met his ex-wife, then jumps 4 years ahead in their relation and in another scene they talk about his 6 year sentence in jail. The wife dies, comes back from the dead (yes the word zombie has fallen). Later in the episode Shadow Moon opens the door of his motel room and finds his zombie wife in the room. What follows is a dump conversation but you get the timeline now.

In episode 5 Shadow Moon is arrested for being 6 days on parole without checking in. A Irish leprechaun gets arrested for killing the already zombie wife and Marilyn Monroe makes an appearance.. I’m not making this up.

? Have you ever seen a tv show that sacrifices the entire 4th episode for a flashback that really doesn’t explain anything more than a 2 minute conversation already did in the first episode.

I haven’t read the book, I can’t compare it to any other show but this has been the worst thing that made it into the IMDB top 100 popularity charts.

The Orville (2017– ) – Star Trek spoof might be incredibly funny

About

From Emmy Award-winning executive producer and creator Seth MacFarlane (FAMILY GUY, “Ted”) and directed by Jon Favreau (“The Jungle Book,” “Iron Man”), THE ORVILLE is a one-hour science fiction series set 400 years in the future that follows the adventures of the U.S.S. Orville, a mid-level exploratory vessel. Its crew, both human and alien, faces the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of regular people in a workplace…even though some of those people are from other planets, and the workplace is a faster-than-light spaceship. In the 25th century, Earth is part of the Planetary Union, a far-reaching, advanced and mostly peaceful civilization with a fleet of 3,000 ships. Down on his luck after a bitter divorce, Planetary Union officer ED MERCER (MacFarlane) finally gets his chance to command one of these ships: the U.S.S. Orville. Determined to prove his worth and write a new chapter in his life, Ed finds that task all the more difficult when the First Officer assigned to his ship is his ex-wife, KELLY GRAYSON (Adrianne Palicki, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Friday Night Lights”). As the new commander, Ed assembles a qualified, but eccentric crew, including his best friend, GORDON MALLOY (Scott Grimes, “ER,” “Justified”), who has problems with authority, but is the best helmsman in the fleet; DR. CLAIRE FINN (Penny Johnson Jerald, “24,” “The Larry Sanders Show”), one of the Union’s most accomplished physicians; BORTUS (Peter Macon, “Shameless,” “Bosch”), an alien from a single-sex species; ISAAC (Mark Jackson, “That Royal Today”), an artificial life-form from a machine society that thinks biological life-forms are inferior; navigator JOHN LAMARR (J. Lee, FAMILY GUY, “The Cleveland Show”), whose casual humor cuts through even the most dire situations; ALARA KITAN (Halston Sage, “Neighbors,” “Goosebumps”), a young, inexperienced security officer whose home planet’s high gravity gives her superior physical strength; and YAPHIT, a gelatinous creature voiced by comedian Norm Macdonald (“The Middle,” “Saturday Night Live”). Somehow, Ed and Kelly must put the past behind them and, with the help of the crew, navigate fascinating and sometimes dangerous adventures in outer space, as well as the tumultuous and captivating day-to-day personal relationships with their colleagues.

Information

MacFarlane originally wrote Orville as a spec script, which was picked up by Fox on May 4, 2016. The network ordered 13 episodes. It will be the first live-action TV series created by MacFarlane, as well as his first live-action starring role on television aside from his small role as Ensign Rivers on Star Trek: Enterprise.

Following the project’s greenlight, MacFarlane stated, “I’ve wanted to do something like this show ever since I was a kid, and the timing finally feels right. 20th and FOX have been good to me for many years, and of course, Dana and Gary have been fantastic bosses and true pals, so it was a no-brainer to come to them with the project. I think this is gonna be something special.”

It looks like every episode will be directed by a different director.  People like Brannon Braga (almost 200 Star Trek episodes), Jon Cassar (multiple 24 shows), James L. Conway (Magicians and multiple Star Trek), Jon Favreau (Jungle Book, Iron Man 1 + 2), Jonathan Frakes (multiple Star Trek), Robert Duncan McNeill (Chuck, Star Trek Voyager + Enterprise) will be directing an episode.

Kodi 17.3 released – with critical security exploit fixed.

Kodi logo

May 22, 2017

Update from Kodi: Due to packaging issue after release some add-ons like PVR, visualisation and Inputstream are missing. Also on Ubuntu 14.04 an issue came to light. We will release v17.3 as soon as we can to solve this problem.

May 25, 2017

Sorry for this quick bump to v17.3 however we deemed it necessary. In the previous v17.2 we had a slight issue due to packaging certain binary add-ons like PVR, visualisation and Inputstream. Sadly we only uncovered this too late after release. Additionally on the older distros like Ubuntu 14.04 in combination with the available GCC 4.8 compiler an issue surfaced which we had to fix as well. This v17.3 release fixed both these issues and should be completely working again including the missing add-ons.

Fixes done in this release:

  • Fixed missing binary add-ons on release time
  • Fixed crash on older distros like Ubuntu 14.04 with GCC 4.8 compiler

From previous v17.2 release:

  • Fix selection after channelgroup switching in PVR guide window
  • Fix handling of gaps that caused eradic behaviour in EPG grid
  • Allow backing out of fullscreen pictures by mapping longpress guesture
  • Quick fix for wake up command not being called in PVR power management
  • Use alternative method to check if platform updates have been installed on Windows
  • Set the minimum version in the code which is currently OSX 10.8
  • Fix possible security flaw which could abused .zip files which try to traverse to a parent directory
  • Use the correct ttc font from the video file for subtitles on Windows
  • Detect and delete zero-byte database files which causes crashes

Security

You may have read in the news that malicious subtitle zip files could potentionally infect and harm your media player including Kodi. When Check Point researchers uncovered this flaw they contacted us up front to let us know about this flaw. Our developers fixed this secuity gap and have added the fix to this v17.2 release. As such we highly encourage all users to install this latest version! Any previous Kodi version will not get any security patch. We have began the roll out of this version and Android Play Store as well as Windows Store have this update pending and will roll out as soon as possible. Please be patient if you are using these store versions. Our official download page of course has the regular install files available for the supported platforms.

To be clear this possible vunrability is only present when you first enable a subtitle dowload add-on and then actually download zipped subtitles. Any subtitles that you already have as text file, are embedded in the video stream or are included with you DVD or Blurays are safe.

Only get static noise on Android?

if you have a Android device that only outputs static noise during playback we’d urge you to contact the manufacturer of your device. Recently we saw that Samsung released their Android 7.0 Nougat update for certain phone range that basically has broken audio support. This is something we as Team Kodi are not going to fix as it’s caused by a bug in their firmware. Only option you have is either stay at Kodi v16 or start contacting your device manufacturer and urge them to fix this issue.

Where can I download Kodi?

As alway you can find the official builds on our download page. Then click on the platform of choice and choose release build. You can install these build just on top of your current Kodi installation without doing a reinstall or cleanup as we do a full migration if needed. All you add-ons or installed skin will keep working.
