Erratum 016US – Synology’s awnser

Synology made a statement yesterday about their products with the Intel Atom C2000.

The full statement:

Synology® Product Status Update

Taipei, Taiwan—February 18, 2017—Synology® Inc. is aware of a new processor erratum discovered in the Intel® Atom™ C2000 family. After in-depth investigation, the possibility of seeing accelerated degradation of a certain processor component is rare after prolonged and heavy usage. This erratum is not known to cause data loss, nor any safety hazards. Based on hundreds of thousands of shipped products equipped with Intel C2538 processors since 2014, Synology has not seen any abnormal error rates compared to products equipped with different Intel processors.

As of today, all products equipped with Intel C2538 processors are performing in-line with Synology’s quality standards. As a testament to our confidence in Synology’s product reliability, we are extending the warranty for Intel C2538 based products by an additional year. A dedicated service email, C2538@synology.com, has also been implemented for further questions.

Note:

  1. The 1-year extended warranty only covers DS415+, DS1515+ DS1815+, DS2415+, RS815(RP)+, and RS2416(RP)+.
  2. Since February 2017, suggested improvements from Intel are incorporated into current and future C2538 based hardware platform.
  3. Intel & Atom are registered trademarks of Intel Corporation.

Let me highlight some things Synology says
  • After in-depth investigation, the possibility of seeing accelerated degradation of a certain processor component is rare after prolonged and heavy usage.
    • The word rare in this sentence bugs me, yes it is rare when you look at all the processors in the world, but this one is confirmed to degrade.
  • This erratum is not known to cause data loss, nor any safety hazards.
    • True, your device wont start so your data is safe from being altered, on the other side you wont be able to read it because your Synology is b0rked!
  • As of today, all products equipped with Intel C2538 processors are performing in-line with Synology’s quality standards.
    • How? Intel has no new version of the Atom. As of today? What about yesterday?
  • we are extending the warranty for Intel C2538 based products by an additional year.
    • Good job Synology. I bet they are crossing their fingers, squeezing their butt cheeks and praying to whomever for the CPU to hold on 3 years 🙂

Conclusion

You get one year extra warranty which is good. I’m keen to see how fast Synology comes with a new lineup based on an other brand CPU or with the new Intel Denverton (C3000 series) which is planned to be release Q1’17. See Intel Denverton
